Six Sigma is a measurement & a methodology, an approach to business improvement with focus on execution & sustainability. Getting across that Six Sigma is a fairly robust tool set & this tool set is embedded in the DMAIC model. CUMI has launched the six sigma program to use this process control mechanisms within the context of sustainable business improvement.
At CUMI, the Six Sigma program was launched during Nov’ 2007. Six Sigma improvement methodologies during our first Green Belt project were taught with focus on the keys to sustaining business results. Based on this experience, we are reinventing Six Sigma internally and externally.
• We introduced the methodology in Nov 2007.
• We set goals of six sigma for all managers.
• We posses 6 Green Belts & successfully trained 20% of our staff in basic six sigma.
• We identified 5 core projects; i.e., processes and fundamentally redesigned each of them from the outside in, starting with customer requirements.
In our journey, the number one thing we’ve learned is that Six Sigma is really about being able to quantify results. Many people equate six sigma simply with defect reduction, and while defect reduction is important, the primary measure of six sigma is financial gain. When at CUMI we first implemented six sigma we put the emphasis on defect reduction. On the way, we realized that if we had been able to put the emphasis on cycle time and time to market, because there lays the real gain and as it turned out, we were right. Hence, we introduced LEAN SIX SIGMA.
What we have learned is all about delivering business results with superior customer focus!
Achieving sustainable business improvement requires integrated team efforts linked to business priorities and we believe six sigma approach take us towards that.
