CCSD – Honing Skills…Helping Lives!

Overview

After 66 years of becoming a republic and celebrating numerous landmarks and achievements, India still mulls over the bridging skill gaps in the strata of the current society. Overseen over the years, given the pace of the economic growth, this has now accumulated to massive proportions where the country sees only a handful of qualitative resources at its helm but a mountain of untapped potential waiting to see the light of day.

With such a diverse demography, it is certainly the responsibility of the entire nation to ready its forces with an employable training and therefore employment. Given the reputation of our economic, technological and social supremacy in the nearing future, the efforts needs to be multiplied, wide-spread and meaningful to make that difference to ensure we, as a nation and its economy have a sustainable growth. Also with the current government pushing the force of the ‘Make in India’ initiative, this will certainly be the need of the hour, year and decades to come.

Objective of CUMI’s Centre for Skill Development (CCSD)

The Murugappa Group as an entity believes in such a mission and is endeavored to make an impact in the lives of people who deserve it the most under the areas of Health, Education and Environment. Under the focus of education, CUMI has specifically targeted the aspect of Skill Development and in 2012 set up CUMI’s Centre for Skill Development (CCSD) at Hosur…a futuristic, progressive and promising project that would touch the lives of the most deserving.

Planned to address the manpower & Skill shortage for the Manufacturing Industry at large, as a part of the bigger picture, the CCSD was positioned with the goal of providing free education and skill-training to deserving students from the underprivileged section of society. The objectives include uplifting the economically downtrodden students by enhancing their employability; Build people capability for the future through a customized training model; & to address skilled manpower shortage.

Running its 3rd year of operation, the centre operates from the Wendt campus, believes in providing the right environment to candidates who emerge from deprived backgrounds and hone them to meet the future skill challenges of the world and not just for the organizations skill need. Strategically located at Hosur (connecting the borders of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh), the centre aims at attracting a diverse population targeting the South Indian population also focusing specially on girl children as a healthy mix in each batch of students. The Centre works closely with NGOs, Rotary and Lions Clubs and various institutions like Gandhigram Rural University, to reach out through various means and modes (pamphlets, radio spots, banners etc.) to deserving candidates from various backgrounds (children of parents who are farmers, drivers, coolies security officers and even single parents) at rural locations (like Madurai, Nagapattinam, Tanjore, Theni, Vellore, Salem, Dharmapuri, Thiruvarur, Dindugal, Krishnagiri and Kanyakumari).

The Differentiating Factor

What differentiates CCSD form other skill development initiatives is that the environment it creates for the participants who are molded as responsible citizens for the future as they are away from their homes and villages and given their upbringing and lifestyle, they are trained on personal and professional etiquettes & discipline. Developing these basic yet professional habits, has transformed them over the course of time and this has created a positive impact, not only amongst themselves, but also amongst other children in their community and villages. Initiatives such as 5S, Cleanliness Drives are taken up right from their hostel rooms to any external environment they interact with…with special recognition awards to motivate them as well.

The Design and Approach

he program is based on the National Council Vocational Training syllabus and besides focusing on certain specific technical trades like in the various trades of Fitter, Turner, Machinist (Grinder), Electrician and Mechanic-Machine Tools Maintenance. The program provides qualitative training on behavioral skills, in addition to enhancement of language speaking abilities.
