Carborundum Universal Limited

CUMI was founded in 1954 as a tripartite collaboration between the Murugappa Group, The Carborundum Co., USA and the Universal Grinding Wheel Co. Ltd.,U.K.

The company pioneered the manufacture of Coated Abrasives, Bonded Abrasives, Nonwoven , Metal working fluids and Power Tools in India. Today the company’s range of over 20,000 different varieties of products With state-of-the art facilities and strategic alliances with global partners, CUMI has achieved a reputation for quality and innovation.CUMI is one of the five manufacturers in the world with fully integrated operations that include mining,
fusion, hydro power stations, manufacturing, marketing and distribution.

Almost all CUMI manufacturing facilities have received the ISO 9001:2000 accreditation for quality standards. A well connected marketing and distribution network of offices and warehouses in India and abroad, ensure that service to customers is given prime importance.

  • 2004 – 2014

    1. Capital investment of about Rs. 4 billion for various modernization, expansion and projects for new product lines.

    2. Automated thin wheel facility at Hosur and Chennai, India.

    3. Establishment of a Modern Silicon Carbide Micro grit plant in Koratty and Cochin SEZ.

    4. Establishment of a Modern Polymer manufacturing facility near Chennai.

    5. Establishment of state-of-the-art Coated Abrasives plant in Sriperumbudur,Metallised Cylinders plant in Hosur and Super Refractories plant II in Serkaddu,India

    6. Acquisition of monolithic Refractory facility in Jabalpur, India.

    7. Establishment of manufacturing facility for thin wheels in Uttarkhand and Power Tools in Jigani, Bangalore.

    8. Establishment of CUMI Middle East & CUMI Canada Inc.

    9. Acquisition of Volzhsky Abrasive Works, Russia and acquisition of 51% holding in Foskor Zirconia(Pty) Ltd., South Africa.

    10. Commissioning of a modern 1000 tonne vitrified Bonded Abrasives plant and 2000 tonne organic Bonded Abrasives facility in China.

    11. Acquisition of Thukela Refractories Isithebe Pty Ltd, South Africa, a fused mineral manufacturing facility in South Africa.

    12. Establishment of Ceramic Foam Refractories Plant in Kochi, India in collaboration with Cellaris Ltd, Israel.

  • 1994 – 2003

    1. 12 MW Hydel project at Maniyar, Kerala, India.

    2. Second unit at Edapally for manufacture of Brown Aluminium Oxide grains.

    3. Acquired a controlling interest in Sterling Abrasives Ltd., Ahmedabad, India.

    4. Acquired a controlling interest in Cutfast Abrasive Tools Limited and Cutfast Polymers Limited and subsequent mergers.

    5. Established CUMI America Inc., USA & CUMI Australia Pty. Ltd

    6. Established a 5.5 MW natural gas based thermal power plant in Nallur, Tamilnadu, India through SEDCO.

    7. Acquired Prodorite Aniti-Corrosives Ltd., a leading player in anti-corrosion engineering.

    8. Cloth processing facility at Maraimalainagar, Tamilnadu.

  • 1984 -1993

    1. Expansion of Bonded Abrasives plant at Hosur, India with a modern facility for vitrified grinding wheels.

    2. Silicon Carbide plant at Koratty, India & Refractories plant at Ranipet, India.

    3. Industrial Ceramics plant at Hosur, India.

    4. Acquisition of 40% interest in Wendt (India) Ltd., which manufactures Super Abrasives.

  • 1974 – 1983

    1. Acquisition of Eastern Abrasives Ltd,a Coated Abrasives manufacturer in Kolkata, India.

    2. Second Bonded Abrasives plant at Hosur, near Bangalore, India.

    3. Established MMTCL as a joint venture with Morgan Group plc. for ceramic fibres.

  • 1964 – 1973

    1. Manufacture of Super Refractories at Chennai, India.

    2. Brown Aluminium Oxide grains plant at Edappally, India.

    3. Bauxite calcination facility at Okha, Gujarat, India.

  • 1954 – 1963

    1. Incorporated as a joint venture between Carborundum Company, USA, Universal Grinding Wheel Company, UK and the Murugappa Group, India.

    2. Acquired a Coated Abrasives facility from Ajax Products Pvt. Ltd.

    3. Bonded Abrasives facility set up at Chennai, India.

    4. Bauxite mining at Bhatia, Gujarat, India.
